A Giant Leap or a Minor Adjustment

Windroot cover

2020 is a leap year and leap years are always special. American Presidential elections happen every leap year. The Olympic summer games are held in leap years. This year, Tokyo will be hosting the games from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, August 9.

Why Do We Have Leap Years?

We need leap years to keep our modern-day Gregorian calendar in alignment with earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes approximately 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds, for the earth to circle once around the sun. But the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year.

If we didn’t add a leap day, on February 29, every four years or so, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every single year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by around 24 days!  That minor adjustment helps keep things on track and working properly.

Starting a Business takes a Leap of Faith

You can do hours of research, study others who have gone before you, get advice from experts and listen to your gut but you have no proof that you are going to succeed. According to Small Business Trends, most people start businesses because they are ready to be their own boss and pursue their passion. Some started because an opportunity presented itself and they were dissatisfied with corporate America. Still, others started a business because of a major life-altering event like being laid off or the death of a spouse. Each of those owners took a leap of faith and so did YOU.

Occasionally your business may need to make leap-year style adjustments to keep things on track and working well.

  • Tweaking an offering to make it more profitable
  • Abandoning a product or service that is not performing
  • Hiring or firing employees
  • Delegating tasks so you can concentrate on what you are best at

Fun Facts

Roman general Julius Caesar introduced the first leap years over 2000 years ago when the world was still using the Julian calendar.

Leap years, under the Gregorian calendar, happen every 4 years. Century years are not leap years unless they can be evenly divided by 400, like 1600 and 2000.
